Propionic Acid is a naturally occurring carboxylic acid. It has a pungent odor. Propionic acid is mainly produced by the hydrocarboxylation of ethylene using nickel carbonyl as the catalyst. It is used as a silage treatment and to produce salts and esters known as propionates. It is also extensively used as a food additive to inhibit the growth of mold and bacteria, particularly by tortilla manufacturers. The European Union E-number is E280.
