Formic Acid is a naturally occurring carboxylic acid. In nature it is produced in the bodies of some ants. Industrial production is mostly derived from methanol. It’s esters and salts are referred to as formates and are important in chemical synthesis. It’s main industrial applications are live feed preservative, leather tanning and textiles, cleaning products, and as a coagulant in the production of rubber. Formic Acid is increasingly important in experimental energy applications where it can be used as a fuel cell.
